What to do in Waisai: Beaches, Birdwatching & Day Trips

Things to do in Waisai include the WTC waterfront, the Geopark Information Center, local food and guided forest outings. Saporkren and Warkesi are trips from Waisai; Kali Biru is farther towards Warsambin and Mayalibit. Book sea activities separately with an operator.

Pantai WTC · Waisai Torang Cinta

WTC is Waisai’s town waterfront, suitable for a stroll and café stop. Keep it separate from an offshore snorkeling trip.

Saporkren

Saporkren is outside Waisai on southern Waigeo. Arrange a local guide and transport for birdwatching or forest walks; wildlife sightings are never guaranteed.

Kali Biru

Kali Biru is an excursion towards Warsambin and Mayalibit, outside Waisai. Arrange road access, local boat, guide, fees and return transport together before leaving.

Raja Ampat Geopark Information Center

The Geopark Information Center explains the islands’ geology, biodiversity and culture. Confirm current visitor hours before going.

Birdwatching

Waisai is a practical base for land-based birdwatching on southern Waigeo. Warkesi forest near town offers guided observation of red and Wilson’s birds-of-paradise. Arrange transport, a local guide and access in advance; this is a forest visit, not a bird display at the port.

Saporkren on southern Waigeo is another base for red and Wilson’s birds-of-paradise. Their observation sites are different: red birds display in trees, while Wilson’s males use a forest-floor court. Ask which sites are active, how steep the walk is and whether viewing shelters are available. Sightings are never guaranteed.

Local food, seafood & coffee

Ask Cahaya Bone about grilled tuna and fish soup, or Logband about seafood and vegetable dishes. At Bandung 99, ask for karedok or gado-gado; confirm ingredients and dietary needs.

Diving & snorkeling from Waisai

  • Ask whether non-resident day guests are accepted, whether a boat runs on your date, and what equipment, certification and fees are required.
  • Explain your swimming or diving experience. Ask about currents, supervision and a suitable site; keep snorkeling separate from the working ferry harbour.

Choose around your available time

  • Half day: a meal in town, the Geopark Information Center if open, then WTC waterfront. Keep time free for your confirmed island pickup.
  • Full day: choose Saporkren birdwatching with an early local guide, or Kali Biru with a road-and-boat arrangement. Avoid fitting a long excursion before a fixed ferry departure.

Reconfirm the Waisai–Sorong sailing and boarding deadline, then work backwards to set your island pickup. Keep the ticket and pickup confirmation offline.

Getting around Waisai

  • Arrange a car or local driver through your accommodation. Agree one-way or return fare, waiting charges and the exact pickup point.
  • For an early forest trip, book the driver and guide the day before; confirm they will also bring you back.

Before buying tickets

Before booking, check your visa and arrival declaration through Indonesian Immigration. Raja Ampat tourism registration through SIPARI and the marine conservation permit are separate processes. Confirm the category, validity, current fees and local access charges. For diving, discuss fitness, insurance, emergency arrangements and your final dive-to-flight interval with the operator.
