Your first trip to Raja Ampat

Understand the journey
Raja Ampat is an archipelago in Southwest Papua. Sorong is a common gateway; many stays in the central islands involve a ferry to Waisai and a separate accommodation boat. Misool needs its own transport plan. An arrival in Sorong is not an arrival at your island accommodation.
Sorong–Waisai: ferry and onward transfer
Normal departures reported from 1 September 2026: 09.00 and 14.00 WIT in both directions. The crossing is approximately two hours. Economy, per person per crossing: Raja Ampat ID holders Rp. 125.000; other domestic passengers Rp. 175.000; foreign visitors Rp. 200.000. Confirm your date, check-in and total charges before travelling; holidays, weather and operational changes can affect departures. VIP: Rp. 300.000. The Rp. 125.000 fare requires an original Indonesian identity card (KTP) showing residence in Raja Ampat Regency, presented at the ticket counter for verification. One KTP may be used for one ticket. Without the required original KTP, the general fare applies.
- Arrange airport–harbour transport and the separate Waisai–accommodation boat. Agree pickup, fare, luggage allowance and a backup contact in writing. Ask the ferry counter about tickets and the current VIP price. Do not assume an online route listing guarantees a seat. Leave room for delays before your return flight.
Before buying tickets
- Choose your main interest and one realistic base region before adding distant islands.
- Ask your host for the exact pickup point, transfer cost, passenger capacity and last workable arrival time.
- Compare flight arrival with ferry check-in and onward pickup. Allow for delays rather than assuming a tight connection.
- Confirm accommodation, applicable visitor fees and entry requirements for your nationality.
Pack for island life
RAI’s preparation checklist: sun protection, insect repellent, personal medicines, a refillable bottle, a dry bag, footwear suited to your activities and offline copies of bookings. Keep important contacts and documents accessible without mobile data. Confirm baggage limits on each flight and boat.

Check every sector for your dates: operating days, stops, arrival date and local time. The Bali–Sorong option may be seasonal or include an additional connection. These examples do not establish a nonstop service or a same-day connection.
Before paying, check whether flights share one ticket and whether the airline protects the connection. On separate tickets, allow time for Indonesian entry formalities, baggage collection, terminal changes and a new check-in. Confirm baggage allowances, including dive equipment, and consider an overnight stop in Jakarta or Bali when needed.
From Sorong, arrange the airport transfer, ferry to Waisai and separate boat to your accommodation, or an agreed direct boat pickup. Late arrivals may require a night in Sorong. For the return, RAI recommends reaching Sorong the day before an important flight.
