Raja Ampat with children and older travellers
RAI’s family checklist focuses on the actual journey and property, rather than assuming an island is suitable for every age.
Check the whole transfer
- Ask the boat operator about life jackets that fit every child and adult, shelter, boarding steps and passenger capacity.
- Discuss the real transfer duration, toilet access, seasickness concerns and what happens if sea conditions change.
- Confirm assistance for reduced mobility at every boarding point; a room described as accessible may still have a difficult boat arrival.
Check the room and daily routine
Ask about extra beds, railings around decks, steps, shaded rest areas, drinking water and meals appropriate to your family. Confirm who supervises children during activities. A house reef is not a supervised swimming pool; discuss entry, exits and local conditions with the host.
Plan around the least flexible need
RAI suggests fewer transfers, a comfortable base and shorter optional outings. Give all ages and needs to the operator, including babies, when confirming the headcount. Ask a travel-health clinician about age-appropriate prevention, medicines and the suitability of a remote destination; adult advice or medication should not automatically be applied to children.
Children’s meals and familiar foods
Ask whether meals can be served without chilli, bones can be removed from fish and portions can be adapted. Do not assume baby food, fresh milk or a high chair is available. Agree on your child’s needs before arrival and ask about safe storage for anything you bring.
