Diving and snorkeling: choose by ability
Choose an operator and a session that fit your experience and the conditions on that day, not only the name of a famous reef.
Snorkeling regions and access
Central Raja Ampat: consider Kri, Gam, Mansuar, Arborek, Friwen and the Fam/Piaynemo area. Ask your host which reefs are reachable from your base, whether entry is from shore or boat, and whether conditions suit your swimming ability. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed.
- September 2026 access reports list Wayag, Kawe, Aljui Bay and Wofoh as closed; reopening has not been independently confirmed by RAI. Treat northern outings as unavailable until your operator confirms lawful access. Plan Misool separately. Lenmakana is a marine lake, not a freshwater lake; confirm access and jellyfish presence locally. October–April is a broad seasonal preference, not a daily sea forecast.
Before entering the water
- Tell the operator your certification, recent experience, comfort in currents and relevant medical screening needs.
- Ask about group size, guide supervision, briefing, entry and exit, surface cover and the option to skip or change a site.
- For snorkeling, discuss swimming ability, flotation and boat pickup. Tide height alone does not establish the current at a reef.
- Confirm equipment fit and condition, communication, emergency oxygen and the evacuation plan.
Flying after diving
For symptom-free recreational divers, Recreational diving guidance recommends at least 12 hours before flying after a single no-decompression dive, and at least 18 hours after multiple dives or several days of diving. Dives requiring decompression stops need substantially longer. Longer intervals reduce risk further. Confirm your actual last-dive and flight times with the operator; do not fly with suspected decompression symptoms and seek urgent medical advice.
Arrival day and wildlife
The flying-after-diving rule concerns flying after a dive. After an inbound flight, assess fatigue and fitness with the operator rather than assuming an automatic dive appointment. Follow local briefings, keep off coral and give marine life space. Seeing a manta is a possibility, not a booking guarantee.
Diving
Kri
Beaches, house reefs and dive facilities make Kri a practical marine-activity base. Cape Kri is a dive site whose currents require an operator assessment.
Melissa's Garden
A reef dive site in the Fam area, known for coral gardens. It is a dive experience rather than a land attraction; assess conditions with a qualified operator.
Arborek
A small inhabited island with village paths, woven handicrafts and reef life around the jetty. Nearby manta outings are separate boat activities.
Cape Kri offers reef slopes and dense fish life; Blue Magic is an offshore reef with schooling fish and possible manta encounters. Conditions can demand strong-current experience. Manta Sandy and Manta Ridge are separate manta-focused sites. The operator must choose the site and timing for your certification, experience and current conditions; no wildlife encounter is guaranteed.

Mansuar · Yenbuba & Sauwandarek
Mansuar combines forested shores with coastal villages. Yenbuba and Sauwandarek offer jetty reef visits and village walks, with permission and local guidance.
Friwen & Friwen Wall
Friwen offers a small-island beach setting; nearby Friwen Wall is a reef-wall outing. Ask about currents, boat support and suitable water entry.
